Hooked on the tube

Laurie and I have been watching a lot of TV recently – on DVD :p In addition to "Lost" which I mentioned before, we’re also watching "Mind Your Language" (the first two seasons I believe – I thought there were only two seasons but have just learnt that there was a third), "The X-Files" (we’ve got seasons 1-5 at the moment) and "The 4400". In fact, we just finished watching the second season of "The 4400" just yesterday and I still have the show running through my mind 🙂 In a sense, the show has elements of other shows which preceded it. You get glimpses of "Taken" (of course that might just be because Joel Gretsch was in both shows :p) and "The X-Files" and sometimes the storylines seem way too familiar.

And yet, "The 4400" has an air of optimism, of hope running through it that "The X-Files" lacked. If you watch "The X-Files" again from the beginning (which we are in the process of doing at the moment :p) you will note that the second and third seasons were different from the first season. The show became much more darker and almost moved into the horror territory from second season onwards. There’s a lot of blood and gore around and a lot of people end up killing themselves. "The 4400" on the other hand, is much more cheerful and hopeful. When "The X-Files" influence makes you think that a tragic event is about to take place, the show somehow finds a happier and lighter resolution. In most respects, I like "The 4400" much better. Of course, that doesn’t mean that I’ll stop watching the rest of "The X-Files" (and even buy the rest of the seasons on DVD) … but I’m also waiting for the unfolding of "The 4400" in the coming seasons 🙂

Hi! I’ve been meaning to drop by and thank you for all your great advice on the AW boards and the freebies (just loaded PlotCraft!) you offer. What an asset you are to the board, I hope you know how you’re appreciated. Laurie, too! (waves)

I’m looking forward to 4400 coming back on the air this summer. While I’m not a drooling fan, it keeps my interest. What I’ve become a drooling fan of are House and Battlestar Galactica.

I liked X-files, too. We got into it late and we don’t have any of the DVDs – I’m tempted. You’re so right about the differences between X-files and 4400 – the latter is a more hopeful story – I just wonder if it’ll stay that way or if we’re being lulled into complacency then *bam* it goes apocalyptic…

Anyway, see you around AW. Thanks again.

Hi Dawno!

We watched the movie for the recent Battlestar Galactica and weren’t impressed. It was actually so bad to us that Fahim forbade we ever speak those words again. :p So we haven’t watched the series and have no plans on it. On the other hand, we have more than enough to keep us busy, so it’s not a problem… House we haven’t seen and I don’t actually know much of anything about it. Hmm.

Are you kidding? This is Sri Lanka, everything’s out on DVD :p We even have the first half of “Lost” season 2 out on DVD and season 2 is still playing over there in the US 🙂 Thanks for the recommendation BTW. We did get “Medium” a couple of weeks ago – haven’t watched it yet though …

I prefer well done…oh, you mean that show! 😉

I’m not sure what Battlestar Galactica movie you mean – the pilot perhaps? But I feel that the series is amazing TV. I won’t try to sway you but I’ll just drop this: Nancy Franklin the TV reviewer for The New Yorker said “The story isn’t ridiculous—something that viewers are on the lookout for in science fiction more than in any other genre—and it raises questions that nag at you in the same way that life on Earth does. “Battlestar Galactica,” refreshingly, is as real as science fiction gets.” http://www.newyorker.com/critics/television/?060123crte_television

🙂

Meanwhile – Have a lovely weekend – what’s left of it!

LOL 🙂 We haven’t watched “Medium” yet but it looked kind of interesting …

As far as “Battelstar Galactica” goes, I was a fan of the original series and I think what irked me more than anything else was the gratuitous changes that they’d made to certain characters :p However, given your recommendation, I guess we’ll have to put my biases aside and give the first season a try :p
