Oooh, that dirty, rotten spam!

I’ve been working on the next release of the WPBlacklist plugin whenever opportunity permitted the last few days. I’ve not been able to do as much as I would have liked due to the fact that I have guest at home at the moment and they take precedence. Fortunately, I’d done most of the work over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday and all that remained was to add the finishing touches and do some testing. I haven’t really tested the plugin as much as I’d like but it seems to work fairly well and so I think I’ll release it now since I probably won’t get the chance to do much more for a week or so :p

So what is new? I don’t have the time to do a full post here and so, I’ll basically copy over the feature list from the post I made to the WordPress Forum :p The new features are as follows:

  1. Better blacklist management (the ability to delete blacklist entries for instance)
  2. The ability to filter out comments based on not just a full IP but a partial IP as well
  3. The ability to check a real-time blacklist for spam IPs
  4. The ability to search existing comments using the blacklist or a given IP or search expression and then delete the found comments, if necesary
  5. The ability to mass-delete comments in the moderation queue while harvesting details from those comments (such as poster IP, URL, e-mail address) and to add them to the blacklist

If you want to get your hands on the plugin after reading all that, you can download it from here :p

As for straight blocking/deleting, I am thinking of implementing this for WPBlacklist 2.1 🙂 I want to make it configurable though and to also add an option to notify the blog owner with an e-mail with the contents of a deleted comment so that there won’t be any accidental deletions. However, I want to make the e-mail optional as well since some might not like a flood of e-mails about automatic deletions :p

Thanks for catching the error on posting – it was due to some invalid URLs which had crept into the blacklist with the latest 2.0 changes. I’ve fixed the problem and have released WPBlacklist 2.01.

By the way, seems like there are a ton of errors when I was commenting… I hope I didn’t break anything. 😉

First line of error:

Warning: Unknown modifier ‘p’ in /home/farook/public_html/sm/wp-content/plugins/blacklist.php on line 58

Heard lovely comments on the blacklist plugin. 🙂 But is there any chance of blocking comments with blacklisted word/name/url so that the comment never makes it to the moderation queue (I think MT does that, but not too sure)? I mean… no one but spammers would have certain words in their name/url (ie who would have “party poker” as a name anyway?), and it would save even more time if there are no comments to moderate, even.

Yea, lazy people and technology. 😛 Not sure if it’s possible though. So far the features seems pretty awesome. 🙂

Everyday I am spending more then 10 minutes just for deleting SPAMs from my e-mail … especialy nigerians SCAMS. The only problem with this plug ins , is that some friends wished to send me e-mails like “visit my new website” or my clients “i got some MONEY for you”
And usualy this very well used keywords into a business enviroment, are used like black words (money, $$$, cash , visit, see, mortage, refinance)

Leave a response
