This is an e-mail I received yesterday from somebody – I will not comment on it since the words that came to my mind at first were unprintable :p Draw your own conclusions …

“I have an interest in using blog, but I can’t use damn .exe downloads because I use a Macintosh instead of crappy-ass PCs running Windows (which really blows). Can you at least MAKE something for people who use Mac OS X? Or AT LEAST something running the classic Mac OS. Please. SOMETHING!!!!!!! and make it a zip file or something. I can’t use these .exe downloads. I can’t stand it when people just make software/freeware stuff, and they only make it to where PCs running Windows can use it. Wake up! The ENTIRE WORLD does not RUN on Windows!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are OTHER OSes TOO!!! Especially Mac OS X (Which actually runs on UNIX if you dont know jack about a Mac). That’s probably the biggest non-windows OS out there. Or, the Classic Mac OS. Following in 3rd, is Linux. PLEASE dont limit your audience to JUST windows users!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The world is BIGGER than THAT!! (and You deserve to have more people liking you and using your goods than this.) I’m begging you. Don’t limit your a! udience to just the people who use the crappy OS on the shoddy machines. You deserve to do something better than this.”

That’s the whole e-mail and the only thing I can say is that if it were that simple to write apps for Windows *and* Mac, a lot more people would be doing it … but insulting/haranguing developers and their development platform is really not the way to influence people and make friends :p

my world revolves around windows. My sister had a new imac, GAVE it away then bought herself a compaq!

Apples were meant for eating.™

Apples: The Forbidden Fruit™

Besides, “One will catch more files (I mean, flies) with honey than with vinegar.”

Finally, “I can’t stand it when people just make software/freeware stuff, and they only make it to where PCs running Windows can use it.” And developers can’t stand it when blowhard users act like this.

I use both platforms. Each has its uses. Neither can mask personality problems. On behalf of Mac users everywhere, I apologize for that person’s behavior.

“and make it a zip file or something”

any self respecting mac user uses stuffit :-p

“Especially Mac OS X (Which actually runs on UNIX if you dont know jack about a Mac)”

mac osx does ‘not’ run on unix. the core is based on freeBSD. which is not unix but a version of unix (afaik)

“That’s probably the biggest non-windows OS out there. Or, the Classic Mac OS”

classic is the emulator built into osx so that apps built for macos can run on osx. again any self respecting mac user refers to pre osx versions as os 7.*/8.*/9.* (as in ‘i’m running os 9.2’)

you are a troll and i collect my $10.

thankyou and goodnight.

hm… one thing that guy said is right.. i was also thinking about coding a daemon to emulate the server feature of Blog on linux, just to be sure to have the server always running 🙂 you all know what means having a windows box connected 24hrs a day.. with a minimal linux daemon we’ll be able to use the server mode in a more effective way.. i have only to find out how to associate a correct BlogID to posts sent to a linux server (in order to match them with the DB on the windows application..) it could be a great idea.. 🙂

Thus far, I haven’t been able to get Blog to run with wine – which is a shame, but VMWare (a solution comparable to running classic under OSX – useful, tolerable, but not always the most well suited) is doing fine in most cases.

That said, I haven’t used Blog in a little while now 😀

apart from the way he expressed himself regarding windows(on which i disagree),the guy has a good point, not all of the world is running on windows..and mac os is definetly superior..even though i have my concerns about os x,it’s a shame that apple replaced the legacy stable os9 with a os that’s bsd at core

and one more thing..jenni whose sister replaced a mac with a compaq…well..even windows fans will know better about preferring a compaq over a mac.ask anyone who knows about compaqs..you probably made a lot of people laugh their socks off with that hilarious comment.

Not to turn this into a Mac vs. PC thing, but first of all, Mac’s were at one time superior to windows based machines. They have let their UI advantage stagnate. The changes in OS X are cosmetic, and don’t really address the fact that Windows has caught up with them. XP is every bit as good as OS X for a “new user.”

That being said, there are differences between the platforms, such that someone confortable with Macs will always find running Windows frustrating, and someone comfortable with Windows will always find running Mac OS (be it 9 or X or whatever) frustrating. My mother in law was a staunch Mac supporter, but when her aging apple hardware basically stopped behaving (requiring constant reboots, sometimes not rebooting at all) she went for a PC. Couple of reasons – 1) cheaper. Waaaaay cheaper. For faster hardware too. 2) Support. For every problem she had on her Mac, she had 1 person she could call for help. With her PC, she’s got more like 10. The instant Mac Zealot response is that “she probably has 10 times the problems on her PC” I know you’d like to believe that, but it’s simply not true.

It’s not 1984 anaymore, and the “ease of use” advantage that Apple had then is completely gone.

Still, if they were at least competitive price-wise with a “build your own” PC solution, I’d have got a mac, based solely on OS X, and the fact that it’s based on Darwin (which was based on FreeBSD) which is technically not Unix, but is certainly un*x (can’t call it Unix because it’s a trademark or something)

Tough to call any OS stable when compared to the BSDs.

Email the damn’ fool back and tell him about Greymatter blog. If he can’t set that up, he has no business owning a computer, be it Mac, PC or Sinclair 1000.

As a former Mac owner (who still likes Mac, just can’t afford ’em thanks to a condition known as fatherhood), I, too, apologize for that blithering idiot’s rudeness.

Get real –

“I can’t stand it when people just make software/freeware stuff, and they only make it to where PCs running Windows can use it.”

I wonder if this individual would like to PAY someone to make him an Apple version of BLOG? I bet not. He wants it for free/cheap. I doubt he understands ALL the costs (not to mention the time) to make an application as good as BLOG.

If he wants the software so badly he can write it himself or contract it out and then he can give it away/sell it and have all the fun himself (puting up with individuals like himself.)

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ON BLOG – Foregt the ill-mannered folks that are so insulting.
